Introducing the next generation to our vibrant sector and giving them a chance to see for themselves the diverse careers available is really important to us as a business.
Having met at a WISH event, Saffron Wilmot joined Fay Poddington, our Social Value Co-Ordinator, for a week of hands-on experience, shadowing Fay as she went out and about to meet clients.
Here’s what Saffron had to say about the experience:
Monday
“I kicked off my week in Barnet with Fay and Sean, heading out on a visit for a kitchen repair at Age UK. I had the pleasure of meeting Sean McBride, the Commercial Supervisor, who turned out to be not just knowledgeable but also a total legend. The whole day was like watching a masterclass in teamwork.
“It was a real eye opener, seeing how ‘social value’ isn’t just a catchphrase thrown around in meetings, but is actually embedded in the way Purdy operates. Honestly, it felt like all departments were synced together, each playing their part in making sure the work they do has a positive impact.
“All in all, it was refreshing mix of insight and fun – and a reminder that a little bit of purpose and passion can go a long way, even when you’re just there to tighten a few screws.
Tuesday
“I got to meet Kinovo’s In-House recruiter, Nerhan Yilmaz, to discuss social value requirements on each contract, which was interesting to learn. I also met with Lucy Venables, the Group HR Administrator to discuss charity events.
Wednesday
“I had the honour of helping to surprise the students and staff members at Salisbury Manor Primary School with brand-new tablets, and it was an experience that truly touched me. Being able to contribute to such a meaningful gesture was incredibly rewarding, especially because I had the opportunity to see first-hand the positive impact that Purdy is having in the community. It was a powerful reminder of how important it is to support education, and how small acts of kindness can make a huge difference.
“The emotional part of the day came when I had the chance to meet the students and witness a session they had with their early years’ teacher. Watching the children so engaged and eager to learn was heart-warming, and it made me realise how much of a difference these resources can make in fostering their development and education. It was a real privilege to be there and see the direct impact of the donations, which made me even prouder of the social value Purdy is delivering in the community.
“Additionally, seeing how passionate Fay was about the cause was truly motivating. It was clear to me that her commitment wasn’t just about the practicalities of the project, but also about making a lasting, meaningful impact.
Thursday
“Fay and I travelled to a community centre in Wandsworth, where I met more members of the Purdy Team (Dave Mooney and Charlie Osbourne). When I saw the plans for the project take place, I realised just how powerful social value can be. The impact of Purdy’s work here goes beyond a fresh coat of paint and some new fixtures – it’s about creating a safe, welcoming space where young people can come together and find an escape from the everyday grind.
“For many, this centre could become a lifeline – a place to unwind, make connections, and find new opportunities. You could almost see it in the air: the sense of possibility for the local youth, who, thanks to this initiative, now have a space to call their own. As young person who used to go to my local youth centres regularly, it was interesting to see the work put in to creating spaces that I once took respite in.
Friday
“I had the opportunity to visit The Skills Centre in Hackney Wick, with Fay, Nerhan, Michael and Jimmy, from the Hackney office. The primary purpose of the visit was to explore the potential for collaboration between the social value team and Build East, particularly in terms of upskilling their current apprentice team to support the upcoming Purdy projects.
“The visit was insightful, as it allowed us to see first-hand how the Skills Centre operates and the various ways in which it could support the development of apprentices in the construction industry. The centre is equipped with a range of training resources, from hands-on workshops to industry-standard equipment, providing a practical learning environment for aspiring tradespeople. We also discussed how upskilling could benefit the apprentices in their long-term careers, making them more versatile and adaptable in the construction industry, offering them additional qualifications or certifications.
Part of the team
“Overall, my work experience at Purdy has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Even though I was only there for a week, I felt so welcomed by everyone. The staff made me feel right at home from day one, and I really appreciated their kindness and support. It was a great opportunity to meet such a dedicated and friendly team, and I’ve learned a lot from my time with them. Overall, it was an enjoyable and insightful week, and I’m grateful for the chance to be part of the Purdy team, even for a short while.”
Fay adds: “Last week I had the pleasure of mentoring the talented Saffron Wilmot, who shadowed me. She dived deep into the concept of social value, learning about the significant impact it has on local communities. Her curiosity, enthusiasm and commitment were truly impressive.
“Saffron is an incredible young lady, and it was an honour to have her shadow me. I have no doubt she will go on to achieve amazing things.”
