Purdy Contracts is totally committed to developing its workforce from within and currently employs 23 apprentices across the business on a scheme, which runs for four years

On average 6-10 apprenticeships are offered each year, and drawn from the geographical areas we work in. We anticipate in the light of the schemes success and our annual growth that places on the scheme will increase in the forthcoming years. Our total workforce, all of whom are directly employed, currently stands at 145 including 23 apprentices, which we believe, clearly demonstrates our commitment to apprenticeships.

All apprentices attend day release, mostly at Hertfordshire Regional College in Broxbourne one day per week where Purdy Contracts has developed a bespoke training package to ensure high levels of technical training are achieved by all of our apprentices.

For the last 3 consecutive years Purdy Contracts has been awarded Employer Of The Year awards for 2009, 2010 and 2011 from the college in respect of the quality of its Apprenticeship Scheme. The College has informed the company that results from the apprentices at Purdy Contracts are significantly and consistently higher than similar schemes ran by other local businesses.

Apprentices gain extensive work experience through their employment with us and are paired with a fully qualified engineer for 12 to 18 months where we can assess their ability and enthusiasm prior to them attending college.

An example of how progression through Purdy is encouraged is Lee Venables. Lee joined Purdy at the age of 16 as an apprentice and worked his way up through the business as an engineer, supervisor and manager and is now the company’s Electrical Director with 21 years service.
